Oil paints are my favorite medium,  but also the most difficult in which to work.   Since childhood,  the challenge of creating images in the style of the old masters has always fascinated me.   Here are some of my favorite excerpts from various paintings,  either commissioned or done for fulfillment of my inner need to create........
James
Oil on canvas
June 6, 1982
A calypso conga player in Aruba
Oil on canvas

This is a section of a larger painting, one of the first I did as a young teen living on the Carribean island of Aruba.   I sold this painting at that time and most of the money went to finance my first trip to Europe.

The challenge of painting fabric, hands, faces,  and hair,  while suggesting light and shadow, is one that every painter loves
Aruban Carnival
Oil on canvas
A portrait of Freda
Oil on canvas

This lady was the mother of a very good childhood friend of mine.  She was very influential in helping me stay focused on painting,  instead of getting a normal job.   She was a wonderful lady.  This was painted about five years before she passed away.

Lucy
Oil on canvas

Lucy owned a restaurant in Gainesville and told me that her father was a portrait artist.   She wanted a portrait of herself done in a classic style  to give to him,  and I painted this for her sometime during 1981.

Mrs. Delaney
Oil on canvas

This is the grandmother of a girlfriend, also painted during the early eighties.  All of the edges are soft and the colors are very muted, especially for the lace.

Veronica
Oil on canvas

This lovely latin lady had all the classic features of a Spanish beauty,  and I had to beg for permission to do this portrait.

"Debbie"

1975
"Captain Johnny Howse"
Oil on canvas,  1973

This old salt used to run rum from Cuba up the mouth of the Suwannee River to Mayo,  Florida to be bottled and driven to Chicago for Al Capone during Prohibition.

Self Portrait, age 20
Oils on panel
Jackson Square, New Orleans
Oil on panel

While living in New Orleans during the early nineties,  I saw this fellow playing with a brass band and dancing with a young English girl.  I happened to have a camera and grabbed a quick snapshot.  This painting is a personal favorite of mine and reminds me of great times during those days.

A Good Laugh
Oil on canvas
1991
Also a personal favorite from my time in New Orleans.  While down in the French Quarter,  a chauffer was standing next to his wagon waiting to take tourists on rides.  I offered him five dollars to get his mule to laugh....
Crescent City Bridge, New Orleans
Oil on canvas
Cedar Key Boatwreck
Oil on canvas
Bridge of Lions
Oil on canvas
2000

This painting of the bridge into St. Augustine Florida is done in a different style than normal for me.  The brush strokes are heavy and the sun is illuminating the southwestern aspect.

Tugboats
