Universal Studios Islands of Adventure
This was one  of Scenic Production's  first jobs for Universal Studios,  done while they were building the Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida.  There were eight Jurassic Park panels which were fabricated from quarter-inch thick fiberglass sheets at the Scenic Productions shop in Gainesville.  The main panel, pictured here,  was of a T-Rex done as a bas relief sculpture that had to have  copper-tinged paint applied over the fiberglass after the background colors were applied.  Then the entire surface had to be clear-coated so that it would hold up to Florida weather.   The panels were completed in Gainesville and shipped to Orlando, where they were bolted to the walls.  There are two giant panels below this one on either side which are about 45 feet long, picturing other dinosaurs.
Pictured here is the largest of the Hard Rock Cafes,  located in Orlando, Florida.   There are over 120 columns on three levels which encircle the building, which resembles an ancient Roman arena.  The columns were fabricated from 0.25 inch thick fiberglass, with capitals and bases on the tops and bottoms.  The base coat, marbelizing and clear coat  has to be able to withstand the demands of Florida weather conditions for years to come.  This project was done for the DeBeers Corporation and the client was extremely pleased with the result.

Seen here is Logo Man,  located at the NBA Cafe. The sculpture is 35 feet high, done in fiberglass at the Scenic Productions shop in Gainesville, Florida.   My job was to apply the primer to all of the steel,  apply the black epoxy primer on the sculpture,  then apply the brown urethane paint and the gold effect.  The clear coating was applied to mimic bronzing.  The texture is very rough.  The project was produced exactly to the client's specifications.   The NBA Cafe sits next door to the Hard Rock Cafe above,  at the Islands of Adventure, Universal Studios,  Orlando Florida.

The fish were built for Poseidon's Fury, also at the Islands of Adventure at Universal Orlando. These were built from fiberglass,  with bronze automotive paint coated with patina.  We built eight of these,  which appear at the bottom of the columns of the live show "Poseidon",  where Poseidon and Zeuss clash and have a giant battle.   Fourteen inch pipes spew thousands of gallons of water out of the mouths during the show.
These scenes are from the Animal Planet set, built for Universal Orlando by Scenic Productions.  This project,  done during spring 2001,  required over 400 panels of 3/4 inch Sintra (similar to fiberglass paneling).  The paint was applied only to the facing surfaces.

This show uses live trained animals, such as otters, pigs,  raccoons, and alligators. The entire set is over 150 feet wide

Here you can see the gorilla.  A live raccoon walks across the leaf, which triggers an applause sign.
The panels were constructed and coated in Gainesville over the course of a week,  then taken to Orlando for installation.  We also produced signage and various other  interactive components.
For Stormforce,  I painted all of the surfaces seen below.  This included all mixing and priming.  I also installed six rings of cobalt neon.

"Men in Black"
Universal Studios, Orlando, Florida

This 54-foot long darkride, fabricated from concrete and plexiglass,  was sculpted at Scenic Productions and re-assembled on site.   My assignment was to apply paint to all of the steel and plexiglass substructure.

JFK Health World Museum
JFK Health World is located in Barrington,  Illinois.  The company I worked for during this time was Museum Services of Gainesville, Florida,  where our team designed and built a series of exhibits for the museum.
The Logo Girl
Seen here is the "Logo Girl" at JFK Health World.  This exhibit is 92 feet in length.  It took me ten days just to paint the pinstripes on the legs alone.  Visitors can walk inside the exhibit,  where there is a theater for learning about the body.  Below are some views to give a sense of the size of this exhibit.  It was assembled in pieces and transverses three floors of the building.  It is still there today and is quite a sight.

Here is a child's interactive exhibit about nutrition, also at JFK Health World.  The mayonaise jar is eight feet high.  The mural along the wall presents information about nutritious foods.
MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada
As paint manager  for this project  "The Luminore Ladies",   all twelve of these16'  fiberglass girls had to be sculpted, glassed, sanded,  and painted with Luminore,  which is a metallic finish paint.  The project was produced at Scenic Productions in Gainesville and shipped to the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where it was assembled around the curved J-shaped pipes which hold up the ceiling.  The seams had to be sanded and hidden,  then touched up with Luminore following installation.   Luminore mimics the effect of gold rather than paint,  and is actually an ore which is sprayed onto the surface.  The coating is then sanded several times and then buffed to such a high lustre that it reflects light just like polished metal.
Morgan's Mall, Destin, Florida
This project was done for Morgan's Mall in Destin, Florida.  Scenic Productions was commissioned to build Nemo's Village inside the mall.   This project included designing, producing and installing coral walls and the interior of Captain Nemo's Nautilus submarine.  Pictured here is a 14 foot custom balloon with a wicker basket beneath it. This raises and lowers throughout the day.  The sculpted letters are five feet high, with the surface emulating fish scales,  done in automotive paints.  It is suspended in front of the balloon.  This is installed in the main mall entrance.

Atlantis Casino, Bahamas
It took the team at Scenic Productions nearly three months to build this 35' long Phoenician styled ship for Sun International, one of the giants in the casino gaming industry.  All of the paint on the hull, oars, and sails had to look worn by years of use.  This job was great fun!

National College Football Hall of Fame, South Bend, Indiana
This seventy-foot tall collection of collegiate football life stands proudly in the central atrium of the National College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Indiana.

I painted and lettered over three hundred books made of foam and resin,  as well as the end-zone astroturf,  the banner and the eight foot diameter bass drum.

The bass drum head,  which was fabricated from white arcylic sheeting,   was painted to appear worn by years of marching use.   The pearl finish on the drum shell mimics the appearance of an actual drum finish quite well.

On the floor level,  I painted a four-foot diameter world globe with stand,  and placed it next to a faux marble bench.   Although not visible in this photograph,  there are 200 foam footballs, as well as other objects and elements related to college football. The project took at least three months to build and two weeks to install during 1995.

 Angel's Diner
Seen here is the first Angel's Diner location,  built on Lee Road in Orlando Florida.  I designed the corporate logo and exterior building concept.
Rialto Theater Marquee
The Villages, Florida

I applied automotive finishes to the exterior surfaces of this fiberglass movie marquee, located in a quaint little themed village located north of Orlando, Florida.  Automotive finishes were utlized due to their ability to withstand Florida's challenging weather conditions.
